  • Simple present to argue: my life is better because I can communicate online, to describe: the OS controls all the HW devices and interacts with users
  • Describe using made for: the sound car is made for listening to music and recording sounds.
  • Comparing devices: the storage capacity of this HDD is bigger than the other, new DVDs are faster than old DVDs.
  • 1st conditional: if the LCD cell is opaque, the light won't pass the screen

INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

  • Debate: How ICT have improved your life?
  • Order some computing related events in a time line using pictures and cards with names and descriptions. By pairs or threes.
  • Draw the main elements of a computer and write examples of peripherals. Make posters by pairs.
  • Order some models of processors in a time line using the information from Wikipedia
  • Place names in a picture of the motherboard.
  • Speaking: students in a line pass each other a card and talk to other classmate:

A: What is it?

B: It is a sound card

A: Sorry, could you repeat please?

B: This device is a sound card

A: Oh, yes! A sound card!

B: Yes it is. The sound card is made for listening to music and recording sounds.

  • Look for prices of storage devices over the Internet. In pairs make a chart with at least two prices of the same device.
  • Listen-look-touch: listen to the teacher explanation of how to dismantle a CD drive, look the procedure and manipulate an old CD drive.

 

  • Guess what's written in the blackboard. One student has to ask another student to guess what device is written. The other mate is only able to answer yes or not.

  • Preparing a speech. One student will be the shop assistant, the other will be the customer.
  • Make some conversions from binary to decimal following teacher's explanations.
  • Make a table with relationships between Kb, Mb, Gb, KB, MB, GB.
  • Calculate how many floppy disks can be stored in a CD, DVD, HDD...
